domus chairs designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara – Code 1270

The “Domus” chairs were designed by the great Finnish architect Ilmari Tapiovaara for the Domus Academica University Student in Helsinki in 1946.

A masterpiece of modern design, comfortable enough to sit for a long time, the Domus chair has had international success and is also known as “The Finn Chair”.

The short armrest allows the chair to be brought closer to the table.

The interior design of the Domus Academica by the architect Pauli Salomaa was the first major commission for Ilmari Tapiovaara and his wife Annikki Tapiovaara, who also designed the furniture for the student residence.

The Domus chair was designed as a multifunctional chair for the different needs of the dormitory. It was intended to be a desk chair for the students’ rooms, but also for use in corridors, canteens and conference rooms. Its design really takes the student into consideration: Domus is a stackable, comfortable and ergonomic chair with an elegant and timeless design. It is still produced by Artek and has become a Finnish design classic.
