These photographs by Kai-Uwe Schulte-Bunert are part of a project entitled “Dante – A Farmer” (2019/2021).

Kai describes the project as follows:

“Dante lives in the countryside of Poviglio, in the province of Reggio Emilia, and for almost thirty years, since his parents died, he has been running the small farm where he moved with his family at the age of six.

He appreciates the freedom he enjoys and would not give up his life for anything in the world.

But now, at the age of 64, he has to leave his home, his land and give up his farming business.

I was interested in recounting an extremely consistent and conscious life journey, guided by a constant search for independence from the obligations of dependent work, social conventions or family conditioning.

These are values that I share and that have allowed me to interpret this work in a profound way.”

With this project, the photographer accompanies Dante in his last year of work, with the intention of leaving a testimony to a form of agriculture that is disappearing along with its older representatives.

The photographs on display are divided into two series:

the first series consists of three landscapes – horizontal format (46.5 x h 31.5)

one depicts a road fading into the horizon, giving continuity to the image; then there are the pole and the electric wires, like graphic details punctuating the scene
the other depicts the farmhouse immersed in the white and silence of the snow; here too we find graphic details such as the tree, which interrupts the white of the image, as well as the cable and the electricity pole;
Finally, a poetic, delicate and refined image of a landscape with ears of wheat and sky, also dotted with electricity poles and wires…

In the second series there are four images in vertical format (32 x H 46.5);

each depicts a window with wooden shutters, clearly belonging to an old house.

Small details, such as the crooked shutter, the cracks in the walls and some pieces of wood leaning against the wall, distinguish them from each other.

All these photographs have a very distinctive graphic appearance, with neutral, dusty colours. They have a strong sense of authenticity and a flavour of the past, but are made contemporary by the photographer’s interpretation, which renders them unique and refined works of art. Perhaps this is also thanks to the particular choice of printing with the “inkjet” technique on matt paper.

The photographs are ethereal, textured and have an appearance that makes them “paintings that portray reality”.

The frame is made of wood.
