Art photographs by Kai-Uwe Schulte-Bunert – “Vaterland” series

These photographs are part of a project entitled ‘Vaterland’ (2005/2007), a German term that refers to one’s country or nation of origin.

They are by German photographer Kai-Uwe Schulte-Bunert, who works between Germany and Italy (he lives in Reggio Emilia).

He is an artist of great talent and sensitivity, yet discreet and humble;

he has completed several photographic projects and video documentaries.

‘The Vaterland project is the continuation of a journey that can be defined as artistic documentation, which has recently led me to portray neglected and negligible themes and places, in short, to give an image to places that are about to disappear.’

I grew up in a small village in Saxony-Anhalt.

My father was born in Halle 80 years ago and still lives nearby, and he is the only member of our family who still lives there.

This personal circumstance gave rise to an impulse in me to undertake a research project that I called ‘Vaterland’, meaning this word in a literal and personal sense as ‘the land of the father’.

In recent decades, the region of Saxony-Anhalt has undergone a drastic change in its structures, its population and its labour system, and this transformation should remain an example for other European regions facing similar conditions caused by the global economy.

My intention is to show a social and at the same time personal situation, combining documentary content with the search for an appropriate artistic language.”
